Photography as Art

In this introduction, the idea of photography being art was discussed quite a bit. Photography has always been art. It was also discussed how photography was used, or thought to be used, as a way of recording the 'truth' of life itself. However, this is quite the opposite. Photography has always been altered in some way, shape, or form. During the beginning of photography back in the mid 1800s, photographers would alter photos using certain techniques in the darkroom during the printing process. Whether it be bad lighting, odd placement, or what have you, photography has always been altered to look better. Photography even to this day utilizes photoshop to add or subtract objects from images. There's a wide range of different genres from landscape to abstract photography and all are considered art. Photography allows us to capture our imagination and views of the world and immortalize it. Photography is the most dynamic form of art. With it, you can accomplish just about anything your heart desires.

This image, taken by my mother who is not a famous photographer, is what I feel utilizes the elements and principles of design. The lines of the image guide you across the photo rather than all around. It somewhat utilizes movement. The balance of this image is stable because the visual weight of each element is consistent. While the photo is somewhat asymmetrical in balance, it still feels stable. The rule of thirds is somewhat utilized because there are points of interest. The unity of the photo is shown with the twins (my brother and I) because we are both looking in the same direction and are stances are similar (a sort of consistency or repetition). In other words, my mother made an artistic image without even realizing it.
